The Controlled-Access Data tier contains clinical data and individually unique information. This tier requires user certification for data access.
Access to this data tier is available to researchers who:
- Agree to restrict their use of the information to biomedical research purposes only,
- Agree with the statements within TCGA Data Use Certification (DUC)
,
- Have their institutions also certifiably agree to the statements within TCGA DUC, and
- Complete the Data Access Request (DAR) form and submit to the Data Access Committee to be a TCGA Approved User. The TCGA DAR form is now available electronically through the DataBase of Genotype and Phenotype (dbGaP). Clicking this link for the Data Access Request will take you to the dbGaP project page for TCGA where you will find the option for "Request to Download Data from dbGaP Authorized Access."
Data within the Controlled-Access Data Tier include:
- Demographic and clinical data up to the level of detail permitted by HIPAA Limited Data Set regulations,
- Genome-wide genotypes, and
- Information linking all sequence traces to a single donor, whose associated data has been stripped of direct identifiers.
Key Human Subjects Protection and Data Access Resources:
- Human Subjects Protection and Data Access Policies
- Data User Certificate (DUC)

- Data Access Request (DAR) (through dbGaP)
Questions regarding Data Access Policies and Procedures can be sent to the TCGA Data Access Committee at tcgadac@mail.nih.gov.
