In the course of developing The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have received input from some of the world’s leading experts in areas such as cancer genomics, bioinformatics, microarray technologies and bioethics, as well as from members of the patient advocacy community.

Reports from meetings with these groups are available below.

  • TCGA Data Portal Use Case Workshop (January 10, 2008) Report PDF File
The TCGA Data Portal Workshop focused on: 1) the implications of cancer genomic information on cancer research, clinical practice and health outcomes; 2) the current resources available for analysis of TCGA data; and 3) future iterations of the TCGA Data Portal.
  • TCGA Data Release Workshop (May 9-10, 2006) Report PDF File
The TCGA Data Release Workshop brought together experts in gene sequencing and database development, as well as key stakeholders to discuss how to balance making the pilot phase data available to a wide range of stakeholders, while protecting the integrity of the data and the privacy of individuals who consent to participate in this effort.
  • Toward a Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Cancer (July 20-22, 2005) Executive Summary PDF File
“Toward a Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Cancer” was co-organized by the NCI and the NHGRI as part of their collaboration to initiate a pilot phase of the Human Cancer Genome Project (HCGP). The long-term goal of the HCGP was to develop a comprehensive catalog of the genomic changes that occur in tumors and obtain an in-depth understanding about the relation of these changes to the biological processes in cancer. The discussion and recommendations of the workshop are described in the subsequent sections of this executive summary.
  • National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB) Working Group on Biomedical Technology (February 16, 2005) Report to National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB) PDF File
This Working Group of the NCAB was tasked with answering the following question: “What specific projects and initiatives could NCI undertake that would have a broadly transforming impact on the entire field of cancer research, with the goal of eliminating death and suffering due to cancer?” This report describes the themes that emerged in the course of the discussions and distills them into a handful of key recommendations.
