The use of novel technologies, the need to integrate different data types and the immense quantity of data generated by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network has led to an expansion of the TCGA Research Network to include new centers devoted to data analysis. The Genome Data Analysis Centers (GDACs) work hand-in-hand with the Genome Characterization Centers (GCCs) to develop state-of-the-art tools that assist researchers with processing and integrating data analyses across the entire genome.

To support its expansion efforts, TCGA announced the selection of six GDACs in September 2009. More information about how the GDACs will integrate with the the other components of the TCGA Research Network and the tools they will be developing will be announced soon. Check back frequently for updates.

TCGA Genome Data Analysis Centers:

GDAC Type A:

These centers will be responsible for the implementation of a bioinformatic approach to the high-throughput processing and analysis of genome-wide data coming in from each of the GCCs.

Broad Institute, Cambridge, Mass.
Principal Investigators: Lynda Chin, M.D.
Gaddy Getz, Ph.D.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.
Principal Investigators: Paul Spellman, Ph.D.
Terrence Speed, Ph.D.

GDAC Type B:

These centers will be responsible for developing innovative bioinformatic and computational tools that can draw biologic and clinical correlations from the genomic datasets delivered by the TCGA Research Network.

Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle, Wash.
University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
Principal Investigators: Ilya Shmulevich, Ph.D.
Wei Zhang, Ph.D.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, N.Y.
